The candidate should have extensive experience in general molecular biology techniques, cell cultures, and bioactivity testing. Industry experience would be a distinct advantage. Other responsibilities will include project development and planning to ensure milestones and deliverables are defined, monitored and delivered on time. The successful candidate will be working with a team producing, purifying and characterising bioactive peptides produced from different food streams.

Qualifications

Candidates must have a PhD in biomedical/pharmacy or related disciplines.

Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated scientist with a background in drug discovery, peptide/protein science and translational research to lead our preclinical pharmacology supporting programs in research and in clinical development stages. This individual will play a key role in designing, optimizing, and implementing a wide-range of biochemical and cell-based assays, as well as in assessing biochemical and cellular activity of candidate compounds. As a member of a multidisciplinary team, you will work closely with team members to identify, characterize and advance compounds through research, preclinical and clinical development.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD (or equivalent degree) in Biology or related discipline with 8+ years’ experience
  • The Head of Biology will most likely have experience leading a small ( > 5 people) biology or drug discovery group in a biotechnology or pharmaceutical company
  • Experience in strategic planning, project leadership, laboratory and budget management
  • Demonstrated contributions to R&D efforts that have led to the development of clinical candidates
  • Expertise in cell and molecular biology, biochemistry, and pharmacology and broad understanding of the physiological principles of health and disease

Job Description

We are currently seeking a high-potential individual with microbiology skills who can work independently and within a multifunctional team to contribute to the discovery and development of bio-active peptides originating from food ingredients as part of our proprietary integrated automated platform. The successful candidate will be an innovative biologist/microbiologist or biomedical engineer with a relevant life sciences background and demonstrated experience solving complex biological problems. Candidates for this lab-based position will have excellent skills in the design, execution, data analysis and interpretation, and presentation of laboratory experiments with minimal supervision and demonstrated learning agility. They will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills and enjoy working in a team environment. A basic understanding of product development, particularly in a regulated clinical environment is desirable.

The primary responsibilities include:

  • Provides technical leadership and domain expertise in microbiology to cross-functional project teams aimed at the development of novel infectious disease peptides and proteins hydrolysates. Works closely with other functions (i.e. with minimal oversight, delivers hands-on lab-based experimental microbiology contributions toward programs or business objectives). Independently provides data analysis and interpretation.
  • Maintains substantial current knowledge in relevant state-of-the art principles and technologies in environmental and clinical microbiology, microbial physiology, biochemistry and data analysis methods.
  • Develops protocols and experimental procedures to address issues or evaluate potential designs. Writes reports, specification or documents related to these efforts.
  • Prepares procedures, writes technical reports, publishes research papers, and makes recommendations based on their research findings.

Qualifications

BSc or MSc is required in biochemistry, chemistry, or related field with at least 1 year’s laboratory experience.

Required Education and Experience

  • PhD in microbiology and/or other biological fields which shows knowledge of microbiology theory, principles, and practices and laboratory procedures, equipment, and instruments.
  • Minimum 2 years of industry experience in pharma and biotech.
  • The successful candidate will have a demonstrated aptitude for solving problems involving biological and cell culture work.
  • Experience with food microbiology is highly desirable.
